Aaron Tippin
A December To Remember
Cut-By-Cut

‘Jingle Bell Rock’
(Joe Beal, Jim Boothe)

We took this one and changed the tempo and the feel from how you normally hear it recorded.  I think it turned out really fun and different.

‘Blue Christmas’
(Bill Hayes, Jay Johnson)

Boy, I was a little nervous to cover an Elvis classic -- so I decided to yodel like I did in my song 'Blue Angel' and I think I ended up sounding more like me and not like me trying to sound like Elvis.  I sure don't want to try and compete with the King.

‘It's A Good Thing Santa Ain't Single’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin)

Thea came up with the idea of what if Santa were single...what would that be like?  We first thought we'd try to write about his bachelor pad and what his lifestyle would be like but it ended up being more about how there would be no way for any man on earth to compete with Santa as far as getting girls because Santa can give every girl whatever she wants.

‘Christmas Is The Warmest Time Of The Year’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin, Kenny Beard)

I had the idea for this song and I wanted to write it so that it sounded like it had been around since the 1940s.  Thea, Kenny and I got together and just started thinking about all of our fond Christmas memories from childhood.  I hope this song makes people feel warm inside when they hear it.

‘He Said That He Was Jesus’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin, Philip Douglas)

This song is based on a true story that happened to me around Christmas time in 1990 when I was heading to Saudi Arabia to perform for the troops with Bob Hope.  I was sitting in a Cafe getting ready to eat when a homeless guy sat down with me and started eating my food.  I asked him his name and he said he was Jesus Christ.  Being raised in the South, I was amazed that anyone would say that and not really mean it and I was not about to take the chance -- so I gave him my food.  Philip Douglas never forgot that story, so when me, Thea and him got together to write he reminded me of it and we decided it would make a good Christmas song.

‘Away In A Manager’
(Traditional)

Biff and Mike thought this would make a good duet for me and Thea.  Instead of doing a harmony part when we sing together, we sing it in unison which is pretty cool.  I'm really happy with how this turned out.

‘The Year That Santa Never Came’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin)

We were trying to think of some different Christmas ideas and Thea said, 'Why don't we write something about Mrs. Claus?  She's kind of an unsung hero.'  So we came up with this story song about how Santa fell and got knocked out and Mrs. Claus saved the day because she was the only other person who knew how to drive the sleigh.  It's a really fun, jazzy feel.

‘Run Rudolph Run’
(J. Marks,M. Brodie)

This was a blast to sing!  I got to really let loose and they even let me do my saber jet sound effect.

‘It's Way Too Close To Christmas To Be This Far From You’
(Aaron Tippin, Donny Kees, Billy Craven)

This song really turned out great!  My manager Billy Craven came up with the idea and me, him and Donny got together on it.  It's a different vocal performance for me because it's a really different kind of melody that I'm used to singing -- but it came out cool.  Biff and Mike decided to put some saxophone and harmonica stuff on the song which really makes it unique.

‘Mama's Gettin' Ready For Christmas’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin, Ricky Scruggs)

Ricky had this idea about his Mama and how she always made Christmas special.  His Mom has passed away so it was kind of a sad thing.  Thea and I still have our Moms so it was hard for us to relate to.  We decided to make it a funny thing about how Moms get obsessed with dragging out the Christmas stuff right after Thanksgiving and how they give everyone in the family a job to do whether they want it or not.

‘A December To Remember’
(Aaron Tippin, Thea Tippin)

This is a love song that Thea and I wrote as a duet.  It's about what is really important about Christmas time -- it's not about the gifts but being together that's important.

‘Silent Night’
(Traditional, arranged by Aaron Tippin and Biff Watson)

I've always thought that this is a beautiful Christmas song and it's a great way to end the album.
